Iliya Mirochnik: Online Digital Portrait Painting Master Class

Join master draftsman, painter and digital artist Iliya Mirochnik for a 4 week long digital portrait painting master class!

Students will learn to merge the constructive drawing and painting techniques of classical academies with contemporary experimental brushwork, textures and color to create dynamic portraits.

You will watch him demonstrate and will have the opportunity to ask questions, and sit in on all critiques.

Originally from Odessa, Ukraine, Iliya immigrated to the United States in the early 1990s with his family. From a young age, Iliya pursued training in the arts in the Russian academic tradition. He studied at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Art and at the Bridgeview School of Fine Arts in New York under the tutelage of professors trained in the art academies of the former Soviet Union. Iliya studied in St. Petersburg, Russia, at the prestigious I.E., Repin State Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, from which he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting.Iliya has been a professor at some of the most prestigious art schools and academies in the country including the Ringling College of Art and Design.

Portrait Painting Workshop

This intensive workshop is designed to provide students with a comprehensive grasp of the structure, resemblance, and essence of the sitter. We focus on the anatomical proportions, volume, and scale of the subject. Students will use chiaroscuro, sfumato, and other light modeling techniques.

Students will work from the live model.

Figure Drawing Intensive

Calendar Next available session starts Jul 13, 2023 at 10:30 am, runs for 4 weeks

In this 4-session course, students will be introduced to figure/ground relationships, gesture, composition, value scales, and the fundamentals of perspective.

Students will learn a tactile approach to drawing that provides students with the tools to build strong perceptual and analytical skills.

Each session will be composed of "quick" poses meant to enforce a relational understanding of the human figure, followed by longer poses or anatomical study.

Plein Air/Indoor Landscape Painting

In this course, students become familiar with classical landscape. The aesthetic ideals of historic landscape help contemporary artists build their understanding of composition, atmosphere, and value. 

Students will experiment with all prima painting and underpainting techniques.

Depending on the weather, this course will be held indoors or outdoors.
