Flower Painting Workshop

In this course, students become familiar with painting flowers from observation using the classical approach. The aesthetic ideals of historical still life help contemporary artists build their understanding of composition, atmosphere, and value. 

Students will experiment with underpainting, stumbling, and glazing techniques.

Paint with PAA Director and Founder Anna Neis this summer on Monday evenings from 6-8 pm.

Learn the drawing and oil painting techniques of the old masters through portraiture. Students will explore structure, composition, color and more through various assignments tailored to their skill level.

Portrait Painting Intensive

This intensive workshop is designed to provide students with a comprehensive grasp of the structure, resemblance, and essence of the sitter. 

PAA founding director Anna Neis will focus her instruction on the anatomical proportions, volume, and scale of the subject. Students will use chiaroscuro, sfumato, and other light modeling techniques.

Students will work from the live model.

NIGHT: Intro to Academic Drawing

A course for beginner - intermediate students covering the basics of academic drawing, including proportion, perspective, symmetry, line weight, academic shading techniques, and more. 

Students skill level will be assessed, and each student will be assigned individual assignments to complete each week. Some projects may continue for multiple sessions and can cover geometric shapes, merging shapes, cast and still life drawing or academic portrait plates.

Figure Drawing Intensive

In this 4-session course, students will be introduced to figure/ground relationships, gesture, composition, value scales, and the fundamentals of perspective.

Students will learn a tactile approach to drawing that provides students with the tools to build strong perceptual and analytical skills.

Each session will be composed of "quick" poses meant to enforce a relational understanding of the human figure, followed by longer poses or anatomical study.

NIGHT: Intro to Classical Painting

Students will learn the basic building blocks of the methods of the old masters, including the application and understanding of painting an imprimatura and underpainting. They will also discuss color theory, values, the application of color, and more.

To learn these methods, students will paint from various reference images of old masterworks, including landscapes, still lives, and portraits.

The number of pieces completed depends on how well a student comprehends techniques and applies them.

Plein Air Landscape Painting

$500

Calendar Next available session starts Jul 12, 2024 at 9 am

Four days of instructed plein-air landscape painting at historical sites in and the surrounding areas of Princeton, NJ. 

Students are encouraged to bring any of the following mediums:

  • Oil paint
  • Gouache
  • Watercolor
  • Soft Pastel - NO OILS

Students must bring their own outdoor painting supplies. This includes all paint, rags, easels, boards, tape, paper or canvas, etc.

Students will paint from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm but are welcome to stay and continue to paint independently after the instructed portion has concluded. Please be respectful of the site's operating hours and on-site events you may encounter.

DAY 1: New Hope Canal - New Hope, PA

DAY 2: Morven Museum and Garden - Princeton, NJ

DAY 3: Duke Farms - Hillsborough Township, NJ

DAY 4: Fonthill Castle - Doylestown, PA
