In this workshop, students will learn to paint the portrait through the age-old technique of master copying. As they were done centuries ago in artist workshops, students will learn by creating small studies of historical, classical portraits. The workshop will conclude will a multi-week, larger copy of a portrait.

This weeklong evening workshop introduces students to traditional  drawing techniques through the study of animals. Working from Princeton Academy of Art’s collection of taxidermy animal specimens and photographic references, students will learn to depict realistic animal subjects using simple materials and observation.

Throughout the week, students will study proportion, anatomy, gesture, texture, value, and mark-making, with particular attention to the different approaches required to represent differnt animal features. Exercises will progress from sketches and studies to more developed drawings.

The workshop concludes on Saturday with a field trip to a wildlife center, where students will have the opportunity to draw directly from a larger collection of taxidermy specimens. This final session will allow students to apply the techniques developed during the week while studying animals at a larger scale and from a variety of viewpoints. Students may choose to participate in the optional field on Saturday. Students must arrange their own transportation. You are encouraged to bring a partner or friends!
